Alex is a talented individual whose talents span various domains. As a composer, he explores various musical styles, collaborating with respected groups and pursuing a degree in composition. A skilled performer on violin, viola, and guitar, he's deeply involved in contemporary music projects. In collaboration of his musical pursuits, Alex works extensively with various technologies, finishing a degree in Computer Science and working as a technician for a local radio station. Additionally, his main day-job is as a luthier, currently apprenticing at a local music store.
Alex's music spans a wide range of genres and expressions, often highlighting dense harmonies and voicings. He has worked with esteemed groups and performers, including the JACK Quartet and the Center for New Music. He has studied with Jean-François Charles and David Gompper and is currently finishing a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Iowa.
LUTHIER
Alex began his journey as a luthier at age 18 when he was hired as a String Consultant for a local music shop in Iowa City during college, helping with all things string-related. Part of this role was performing spot-repairs on student instruments. After demonstrating a passion and aptitude for repair, that shop started his lutherie apprenticeship at 21 years of age. Since then, Alex has traveled across the country for workshops and study with renowned figures and groups.
PERFORMER
Alex is a violinist, violist, and guitarist. His composition background fuels his passion for playing new music. As a founding member of The New Third Space Ensemble in Chicago as a guitarist, he has helped push forward new music. Outside of NTS, Alex has participated in projects with composers like Caroline Shaw and Wynton Marsalis. He previously served as the associate principal violist of the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra, finishing out his scholarship in viola performance. Alex’s studied viola with Christine Rutledge and Paul-Price Brenner, and guitar with Marcus DeJesus.
TECHNOLOGIST
Alex passion for computers and technology began at a young age after building his first computer at age nine. Since then, he has worked in a variety of fields; everything from software development to audio production. Currently, he works as the Operations Manager at KRUI radio, where he handles everything from hardware repairs and managing servers and network connections to writing custom software and working as an audio engineer, working extensively with Audio-over-Internet systems. Alex is currently finishing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at The University of Iowa.
